23rd Jan: ERP Assignment

We have devoted 3 lectures on understanding "What is ERP". I hope you now have reasonably good idea of what is called ERP. Why it is given so much importance and identified as a special category of Information System. We will take next few sessions to get into the details of Business Functionality built into ERP and the Technology of ERP. While we are doing this study in the class, I would like you to do some research independently and prepare a comparative study of various Open ERP products with SAP ByD ERP solution. At the end of your study, you are expected to provide a comparative report of one Open ERP product with SAP ByD business and technical features. You will get about 5 minutes to present your understanding to the whole class in about 2 weeks from now. As a group we will also compile your study of individual products into a single table and then publish it on Wikipedia.

Today in the class, we discussed few terms (the jargon) related to ERP. The special terms or jargon is created in every subject. For free and quick communication with experts you need to know all these terms very well. Here is one Glossary of ERP terms http://wiki.openbravo.com/wiki/Openbravo_ERP_Glossary. This is not very exhaustive list and specially SAP related many terms are not included, but  looks like a good start. If we all start contributing to this Open Wiki Glossary list, this will become complete and we all can use it in future.

As discussed in the class, you need to make a group of minimum 4 and maximum 8 students to complete your ERP assignment. Identify each group with the first name of the leader of the group. If we end up in having more than one group with same first name of leader then we will do the separation when we meet next time on Wednesday (25th). Please enter the group name (first name of leader) in today's input form at http://goo.gl/9jFWf

The business and Technology features of the selected product by the group are to be entered and compared with ByD features in a spreadsheet available at http://goo.gl/9tdBl. First make a copy of this spreadsheet on your laptop and then start studying and entering feature comparisons with ByD. Use remark column for all the details you wish to record for that feature.

wish you good luck,

Ashok Ranade

  1. You are right that the list on wiki miss many SAP related terms and If we all start contributing to this list, someday this will become complete and we all will benefit from this.
